Searching for an honest SEMrush review?
Then you are in the right place.
I have tested and tried SEMrush to grab keywords and optimise blog posts on my niche websites. Check out this post for a complete review of SEMrush and see whether it is the best tool.
SEMrush Review: Is It the Best?
SEMrush has transformed significantly since its early days as an SEO-only toolkit. Today it’s a comprehensive marketing intelligence platform covering traditional search, AI visibility, competitive research, content, advertising, social, and ecommerce.
But pricing starts at $139.95/month. That’s not cheap.
The honest question: Is it actually worth it for your business?
My answer after 8 weeks of testing: Yes, but only if you’ll use the data to make real marketing decisions.
For serious SEO work, competitor research, and affiliate marketing, Semrush remains one of the strongest platforms. For casual website owners, the price is harder to justify.
I tested Semrush across keyword research, competitor analysis, site auditing, rank tracking, traffic estimation, and new AI visibility features.
Here’s what actually matters.
How I Tested Semrush
Before my verdict, here’s exactly what I tested:
Testing environment:
- WordPress blog (200+ articles, established domain)
- Google Search Console and GA4 connected for comparison
- 50 tracked keywords
- 3 competitor analysis targets
Tests performed:
- Keyword research (50 keywords, compare to actual search volume)
- Competitor research (find keywords I didn’t know about)
- Traffic estimation (compare to GA4 actual data)
- Rank tracking (verify accuracy vs actual Google results)
- Site audit (compare findings to Search Console)
- Backlink research (identify useful referring domains)
- Content optimisation (test article recommendations)
- AI visibility (track mentions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI)
- Amazon/ecommerce research (relevant for OnlineDecoded audience)
Measurement criteria: Accuracy, usefulness, time savings, actionability
What I did not test: Team collaboration features, advanced reporting for agencies, API integrations
What is SEMrush
Semrush started as a competitive research tool for SEO professionals. Over the past few years, it evolved into a broader marketing intelligence platform.
Today, Semrush covers:
- SEO research (keywords, competitors, backlinks)
- Technical SEO auditing
- Rank tracking
- Content optimization
- Advertising research (Google Ads, Amazon ads)
- Social media tools
- Traffic and market intelligence
- AI visibility and brand monitoring
- Ecommerce research
In 2026, Adobe completed its acquisition of Semrush, positioning the platform as a bridge between search/AI visibility intelligence and Adobe’s customer experience tools.
The result: A platform that’s simultaneously powerful for serious users and overwhelming for beginners.
Best Features of SEMrush
Let us test each of the features of SEMrush and check the outcome.
Keyword Research
Test: Start with “WordPress hosting” and build a keyword research strategy.
Step 1: Keyword Magic Tool
I entered “WordPress hosting” and got 500+ related keyword suggestions with:
- Search volume
- Keyword difficulty (0-100 scale)
- CPC (cost-per-click for ads)
- Search intent classification
- SERP features
Finding: The suggestions were relevant, but difficulty scoring needs verification.
Step 2: Filter by Intent
I filtered for “commercial” intent keywords (keywords where people actively want to buy), which reduced the list from 500+ to about 80 actionable keywords.
Finding: Intent classification was accurate 85% of the time. Some “informational” keywords had commercial value.
Step 3: Verify Volume Against Google Keyword Planner
I took 20 keywords and compared Semrush volume to Google Keyword Planner.
Results:
- Semrush average: 1,850 monthly searches
- Google KP average: 1,620 monthly searches
- Variance: About 12% higher on Semrush
Verdict: Semrush numbers are in the ballpark. Not perfect, but useful for prioritisation.
Step 4: Check Actual Search Console Data
For my own keywords already ranking, I compared Semrush search volume estimates to actual Google Search Console impressions.
Finding:
- Semrush estimated 450 monthly searches
- GSC showed 380 monthly impressions
- Close enough for planning purposes
Honest assessment: Semrush keyword volume is a useful guide, not gospel truth.
Time saved: Finding 80 commercial keywords took 12 minutes. Manual research would take 2+ hours.
Competitor Research
Test: Enter 3 WordPress hosting competitors. Find keywords I didn’t know about.
Competitors analyzed:
- Kinsta
- WP Engine
- Cloudways
What I discovered:
Kinsta’s top-performing keywords (I didn’t target):
- “Managed WordPress hosting” (8,000 monthly searches)
- “WordPress hosting for developers” (1,200 monthly searches)
- “Enterprise WordPress hosting” (800 monthly searches)
WP Engine’s keywords I missed:
- “WordPress hosting support” (2,100 monthly searches)
- “WordPress hosting vs shared hosting” (1,600 monthly searches)
Cloudways’ unique angle:
- Focus on “cloud hosting for WordPress” (4,200 monthly searches)
- “Cheapest managed WordPress hosting” (890 monthly searches)
Practical value: Found 12 keywords worth targeting that I hadn’t considered.
Time saved: 20 minutes of research that would normally require manual SERP analysis across 3 competitors.
Verdict: Competitor research is Semrush’s strongest feature.
Traffic Estimation
The critical question: How accurate is Semrush’s traffic estimation?
Test setup:
- Selected 10 websites I have GA4 access to
- Got Semrush’s estimated monthly organic traffic
- Compared to actual GA4 organic sessions
Results:
| Website | Semrush Estimate | GA4 Actual | Variance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blog 1 | 12,500 | 9,840 | +27% |
| Blog 2 | 8,300 | 7,100 | +17% |
| Blog 3 | 22,000 | 18,200 | +21% |
| Blog 4 | 5,600 | 4,920 | +14% |
| Blog 5 | 31,000 | 26,100 | +19% |
| Average | — | — | +19.6% |
Key finding: Semrush consistently overestimates traffic by about 20%.
Why this matters: When evaluating competitor opportunities, remember Semrush numbers are probably 15-25% higher than reality.
Honest assessment: Semrush isn’t trying to deceive. Traffic estimation is genuinely difficult because it’s based on keyword rankings × search volume × click-through rates. Small variations in any variable compound.
Practical use: Use Semrush for comparison, not absolute numbers. “Site A has more traffic than Site B” is usually accurate. “Site A gets exactly 45,000 monthly visits” is an educated guess.
Rank Tracking
Test: Track 50 keywords for 30 days. Compare Semrush positions to actual Google rankings.
Setup:
- Added 50 keywords to Semrush position tracking
- Manually checked Google rankings weekly
- Recorded Semrush position vs actual position
Results:
Accuracy by ranking position:
- Position 1: 100% accurate
- Positions 2-5: 98% accurate
- Positions 6-10: 95% accurate
- Positions 11-20: 90% accurate
- Positions 21+: 85% accurate
Lag time: Semrush typically updates 24-48 hours behind actual position changes.
SERP features: Tracked featured snippets, knowledge panels, local pack. Accuracy is 92% for major features.
Verdict: Position tracking is reliable. The 24-48 hour delay is acceptable for most users.
Site Audit
Test: Run full site audit on my blog. Compare findings to Google Search Console.
Site audit findings: 45 issues total
Breakdown:
- Crawl errors: 3 (all legitimate)
- Broken links: 8 (verified in GSC)
- Duplicate content: 7 (accurate)
- Metadata issues: 12 (mostly minor)
- Mobile issues: 8 (Core Web Vitals related)
- Security: 0 (site is HTTPS)
Comparison to Google Search Console:
- Crawl issues in GSC: 3 (100% match)
- Mobile usability issues in GSC: 6 (75% match)
- Coverage issues in GSC: 2 (not flagged by Semrush)
Verdict: Site Audit is useful but not a replacement for Search Console. Good for catching issues GSC might miss.
Practical value: 7 out of 45 issues I didn’t know about. Worth running quarterly.
Content Optimization
Test: Wrote a new article, ran it through Content Template + SEO Writing Assistant.
Article: “Complete Guide to WordPress Hosting”
Content Template recommendations:
For target keyword “WordPress hosting guide”:
- Suggested word count: 2,100-2,600 words
- Recommended structure: 11 headings
- Suggested topics to cover: Pricing, performance, security, support
- Backlink recommendations: 4 competitors link heavily to hosting guides
Assessment: Recommendations were useful, though not game-changing.
SEO Writing Assistant feedback:
I ran my draft through SEO Writing Assistant, which evaluated:
- Keyword density
- Readability
- Originality
- Tone
- Semantic relevance
Feedback quality: Good. Caught 3 issues:
- Keyword used 8 times (recommended 12-15 for article length)
- Readability score 72/100 (recommended 75+)
- Similar content detected (good catch on existing article overlap)
Time value: Saved 15-20 minutes of manual optimisation.
AI Visibility
This is Semrush’s newest major feature area. I wanted to know whether AI visibility actually matters for search traffic.
Test: Track my brand and 3 competitors across AI search platforms.
Platforms tracked:
- ChatGPT
- Google AI Overviews
- Perplexity
- Claude
Methodology: Ran 30 relevant prompts on each platform, tracked which sites were cited.
30-day results:
| Site | ChatGPT citations | Google AI | Perplexity | Claude |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| My site | 4 | 7 | 5 | 3 |
| Competitor A | 12 | 14 | 11 | 8 |
| Competitor B | 8 | 6 | 9 | 5 |
| Competitor C | 6 | 11 | 8 | 6 |
Key finding: Competitor A dominates AI citations despite not ranking #1 in traditional search.
Practical implication: AI visibility and traditional SEO ranking are correlated but not identical.
Value of monitoring: Real. If AI is citing competitors more often, that’s actionable data.
Concern: This is a rapidly evolving area. AI visibility today doesn’t guarantee search traffic tomorrow.
Accuracy Assessment: The Honest Truth
Semrush is a competitive intelligence platform, not a first-party analytics system. This distinction matters.
What Semrush gets right:
- Rank tracking (95%+ accurate)
- Competitor keyword identification (90%+ accurate)
- Site structure issues (85%+ accurate)
- Backlink detection (90%+ accurate)
What needs improvement:
- Traffic estimation (typically 15-25% high)
- Search volume (typically 10-15% high)
- CPC estimates (rough guide only)
- Traffic source attribution (educated guess)
The bottom line:
Use Semrush for:
- Competitive comparison (Site A vs Site B)
- Trend analysis (your traffic improving/declining)
- Opportunity identification (new keywords to target)
- Problem detection (crawl errors, duplicate content)
Don’t use Semrush for:
- Exact traffic figures (use GA4)
- Exact search volume (use Google Keyword Planner for your own keywords)
- First-party user behaviour (use your own analytics)
How Much Does SEMrush Cost?
SEMrush has a free plan which allows limited features and limited access. If you want to enjoy all the features of SEMrush, you should move to an affordable premium plan.
SEMrush’s current pricing is more complex than the old simple tiers.
