Want to get Grammarly Pro for free? First thing to know: Grammarly Premium is now called Grammarly Pro, and there’s no permanent free Pro account for regular users. You can still use it for free and legally, either for a limited time or through someone who already pays for it.

Quick Answer: Start the official 7-day Pro trial (cancel before it ends and you pay nothing), check whether your school or employer has a Grammarly license, or stay on the free plan for spelling and grammar. If you need Pro long term, students and a few other groups get 50% off. Skip shared accounts and “premium cookies”. They break Grammarly’s rules and expose your writing to strangers.
The Legit Ways To Get Grammarly Pro For Free
| Method | Cost | How long it lasts | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official Pro free trial | $0 during the trial (card needed) | About 7 days | Anyone who wants to test Pro |
| Grammarly for Education (school license) | $0 to you | While you’re enrolled | College and university students |
| Work license | $0 to you | While you work there | Employees at companies on Grammarly Pro or Enterprise |
| Grammarly Free plan | $0 | Forever | Spelling, grammar, and tone checks |
| 50% off via SheerID (not free, but close) | $72 first year | One year | Students, teachers, military, healthcare workers, seniors |
Start the official Grammarly Pro Free Trial
This is the easiest way to use Pro without paying. Grammarly’s plans page offers a free trial of Pro, and most people see a 7-day trial.
- Go to Grammarly and create a free account.
- Open the plans page and choose the Pro free trial.
- Add a card or PayPal. You won’t be charged during the trial.
- Grammarly emails you a reminder two days before the trial ends. Cancel before then if you don’t want to pay.
How to get the most from 7 days: line up your writing before you start. Have your essay draft, your blog posts, or that long report ready to run through Pro on day one. A trial you start on a quiet week is a trial you waste.
Get It Through Your School (Grammarly for Education)
This is the closest thing to “Grammarly Pro free forever” for students. Thousands of colleges and universities pay for Grammarly for Education, and students on those licenses get the paid features at no cost.
To check if your school has it:
- Search your school website or library guides for “Grammarly”. Many college libraries have a help page explaining how to sign up.
- Ask the library help desk, the writing centre, or IT support.
- Sign up at Grammarly with your school email and see if it offers to add you to your school’s account.
One thing to know: a .edu email alone doesn’t unlock Pro. Your school has to have bought a license.
If it hasn’t, the next best option is the student discount, which I explain in my Grammarly student discount guide.
Ask Your Employer
Many companies buy Grammarly Pro or Enterprise for their teams, especially in support, sales, and marketing.
If you write emails, reports, or documentation at work, ask your manager or IT team whether a license exists or can be added. It costs you nothing to ask, and a company that cares about clear writing often says yes.
Just remember that a work account belongs to your employer. Keep personal writing off it.
Use Grammarly Free (It’s Better Than People Think)
If you mostly need clean spelling and grammar, you may not need Pro at all. The free plan:
- Fixes spelling, grammar, and punctuation mistakes
- Shows the tone of your writing
- Gives you 100 AI prompts a month
- Works in your browser, Google Docs, Word, and email
Here’s what Pro adds on top:
| Feature | Free | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Spelling and grammar checks | Yes | Yes |
| Tone detection | Yes | Yes |
| Full sentence rewrites | No | Yes |
| Tone adjustments | No | Yes |
| Plagiarism and AI text detection | No | Yes |
| AI prompts per month | 100 | 2,000 |
| Price | $0 | $12/month billed annually |
You can stretch the free plan further by pairing it with other free tools. For plagiarism checks, use one of these free plagiarism checkers.
For rewording, try a free paraphrasing tool. That combo covers most of what people buy Pro for.
Get Pro At Half Price (When Free Isn’t An Option)
Not free, but worth knowing. Grammarly gives 50% off Pro to verified groups through SheerID: students, graduate students, teachers, military members, first responders, healthcare workers, seniors, and young adults.
That’s $72 for the first year instead of $144.
The other cheap window is November. Grammarly runs a Black Friday sale on Pro most years, and you don’t need to verify anything to get it.
I update my Grammarly Black Friday deal post when the sale goes live.
What About Grammarly Referrals?
Older guides talked about earning free Premium weeks by inviting friends. Grammarly has changed its programs a few times since then, and I couldn’t confirm a public referral reward running right now.
If your account shows an “invite friends” option, use it. If not, don’t count on it.
“Free Grammarly Premium” Tricks To Avoid
Search for free Grammarly Premium, and you’ll find shared accounts, “premium cookies”, cracked extensions, and cheap resold subscriptions.
Some of these pages rank on Google. I’d skip all of them, and here’s why:
- They break Grammarly’s terms. Shared and resold accounts get shut down, often in the middle of a semester or a deadline.
- Your writing isn’t private. On a shared account, other users can see documents saved in the editor. That includes your essays, client work, and emails.
- Cookie and crack files are a malware risk. You’re installing something from a stranger that has access to your browser, where your passwords and bank sessions live.
- “Premium account generators” don’t exist. They’re survey scams or worse.
Seven days of the real trial is worth more than a month on a shared account that could disappear tomorrow.
Old Methods That No Longer Work
When I first wrote this post in 2014, a few other tips were floating around. Here’s where they stand:
- Emailing Grammarly to ask for free Premium: support doesn’t hand out free plans on request. Use the trial instead.
- Joining the affiliate program for free access: affiliate terms change often and don’t guarantee a Pro account. Join only if you plan to promote Grammarly. My guide to choosing an affiliate program can help you decide.
- Asking for a review copy: this can still work for established bloggers and creators with real traffic, but it’s a pitch, not a method. Don’t expect a reply if your blog is new.
Is Grammarly Pro Worth Paying For?
For bloggers and freelance writers, I think yes. The full-sentence rewrites and plagiarism check save real editing time, and one paid article can cover a year of Pro.
If you’re just starting a blog, the free plan is enough until you’re publishing regularly.
For students, check for a school license first, then use the 50% discount. For casual users writing emails, stick with Free.

FAQs Related to How to Get Grammarly Pro For Free
Is Grammarly Premium still available?
No. Grammarly renamed Premium to Grammarly Pro and moved existing Premium subscribers over to it. If a page still talks about “Grammarly Premium” prices, it’s probably out of date.
Can I get Grammarly Pro for free forever?
Not on your own. The only long-term free route is a license paid for by your school or employer. Everyone else can use the free plan forever or Pro free during the trial.
How long is the Grammarly Pro free trial?
Most users see a 7-day trial. Grammarly emails you two days before it ends, so you have time to cancel.
Do I need a credit card for the free trial?
Yes. Grammarly asks for a payment method to start the Pro trial but doesn’t charge you until the trial ends.
Is using a shared Grammarly Premium account safe?
No. Shared accounts break Grammarly’s terms, can be banned at any time, and let other users see your saved documents.
Can students get Grammarly Pro for free?
Yes, if their school has Grammarly for Education. Otherwise, students can get 50% off Pro by verifying through SheerID. Full steps are in my Grammarly student discount post.
How much does Grammarly Pro cost after the trial?
Pro costs $12 a month billed annually ($144 a year). Monthly billing costs more, about $30 a month.
Final Words
You can use Grammarly Pro for free in 2026, just not forever and not through a shady shared login.
Start the 7-day trial when you have real writing to fix, check whether your school or employer already pays for it, and lean on the free plan the rest of the time.
If you decide to pay, wait for a discount: 50% off through SheerID or the Black Friday sale.
