Grammarly Student Discount: Exclusive 50% Off Grammarly Pro

The Grammarly student discount is real, and it’s bigger than most students expect. Verified students get 50% off Grammarly Pro through SheerID, which drops the annual plan from $144 to $72 for the first year.

There’s a catch most guides skip: the discount covers the first year, so you need to know what happens when it renews.

I’ll walk you through what Pro costs for students, how to claim the discount step by step, and the cheaper or free routes, including getting Grammarly through your school. If your university already pays for it, you may not need to pay anything.

Quick Answer: Verified students get 50% off Grammarly Pro through SheerID.That’s $72 for the first year instead of $144.The discount applies to the first year, so check the renewal price. Many schools provide Grammarly free, so ask before you pay. The post covers claim steps and cheaper or free alternatives.

That’s the short answer. The longer one matters because a lot of pages ranking for this keyword get it wrong.

Some still call the plan “Premium” (Grammarly renamed it to Pro), some quote prices from 2022, and a few claim discounts of 60% or 73% that you won’t find anywhere on Grammarly’s own site.

One even says there’s no student discount at all.

I’ve been covering Grammarly on this blog since 2014, so I went back to Grammarly’s support pages and plans page to check what’s true today. Here’s what I found.

Grammarly Student Discount Offer

Grammarly’s plans page lists Pro at $12 per month billed annually, which is $144 a year. Paying month to month costs a lot more (around $30 a month), so the annual plan is the one to discount.

PlanNormal priceWith the student discount
Grammarly Free$0$0
Grammarly Pro, annual$144/year ($12/month)$72 for the first year (about $6/month)
Grammarly Pro, monthlyAbout $30/month50% off the first month only

If you want Pro for a full school year, take the annual plan. A 50% discount on a single month saves you around $15. On the annual plan, it saves you $72.

Prices can change by country, and Grammarly runs its own sales, so always check the final price on the checkout page before you pay.

How to Claim the Grammarly Student Discount (step by step)

Create a free Grammarly account if you don’t have one. Use the email you want the subscription on. It doesn’t have to be your school email.

Open Grammarly’s student offer. Grammarly links to it from its help article Does Grammarly offer discounts for students? There are two versions: one for students and one for graduate students. Pick the right one.

Verify with SheerID. Enter your name, school, and date of birth. Most students get approved right away. If SheerID can’t match you, it asks for a document such as a student ID, class schedule, or tuition receipt dated within the current term.

Check your inbox. SheerID emails you a promo link. Check spam if you don’t see it.

Upgrade through that link on the web. Choose the annual plan to get the biggest savings. Don’t upgrade inside the iPhone or Android app, because App Store and Google Play purchases don’t qualify.

Set a reminder for renewal. The discount covers one billing period. After that, Pro renews at the standard rate unless you cancel.

If you’re not a student but still want Pro cheaper, Grammarly’s SheerID offers also cover teachers, military members, first responders, healthcare workers, seniors, and young adults. Same 50% off, same rules.

The Catches Nobody Mentions

The discount is good. It also comes with rules that most coupon pages skip, and they’re the ones that cause angry support tickets later.

It’s a first-year deal. Grammarly says the promo is valid for one subscription period. Year two costs the full $144 unless you cancel or catch a sale.

You can’t stack it. The student offer won’t combine with a Black Friday code or any other promo. Pick whichever is bigger.

It doesn’t apply retroactively. If you already paid for Pro last week, Grammarly won’t refund the difference through this offer.

Mobile app purchases are excluded. Upgrade in a browser, not inside the app.

Only the first seat is discounted. If you add teammates, extra seats cost the normal price.

Student Discount vs Black Friday: Which Saves More?

Every November, Grammarly runs a Black Friday sale on Pro. In past years, it has landed around 50% off annual plans, sometimes a little more, for a short window.

If the Black Friday deal beats 50%, it’s the better pick, and you don’t need to verify anything.

My take: If you need Grammarly now for assignments, use the student discount now. Waiting a month to save an extra few dollars isn’t worth losing marks on a paper. If you can wait, compare both. I track the sale every year in my Grammarly Black Friday deal post.

Check This First: Your School May Already Pay For It

Before you spend $72, check whether your university has Grammarly for Education. Thousands of schools buy campus licenses, and students on those licenses get the paid features at no cost.

Here’s how to find out:

  • Search your school’s website or library pages for “Grammarly”.
  • Ask the library help desk or the writing centre. Many college libraries have an FAQ page on it.
  • Try signing up for Grammarly with your school email. If your school has a license, you’ll usually see an option to join it.

If your school has a license, you don’t need the discount at all. I cover this and other legit routes in my guide on how to get Grammarly Pro for free.

What Students Actually Get With Grammarly Pro

The free plan already catches spelling and grammar mistakes and shows your tone. That’s enough for emails and short assignments. Pro earns its price on longer academic writing:

  • Full sentence rewrites for clarity, which helps when a paragraph is technically correct but hard to read.
  • Plagiarism and AI text detection, so you can check your essay before your professor’s tool does.
  • 2,000 AI prompts a month instead of 100 on the free plan.
  • Tone and fluency suggestions, which help a lot if English isn’t your first language.

A quick word on the plagiarism checker: it’s a self-check tool, not a guarantee. If you write a lot, it’s worth knowing how other checkers compare.

My list of free plagiarism checker tools has a few that work well alongside Grammarly, and this guide on how to avoid plagiarism applies to essays as much as blog posts.

Is Grammarly Pro Worth It For Students?

For most undergrads writing a few essays a term, the free plan plus a careful read-through is enough. I’d only pay if one of these sounds like you:

  • You write long papers, a thesis, or a dissertation.
  • English is your second language, and you want help with fluency, not just typos.
  • You need to check your work for accidental plagiarism before submitting.
  • You also write for money on the side. If that’s you, Pro pays for itself quickly. Here are some sites that pay you to write and a list of part-time jobs for college students.

At $72 for a year with the discount, it costs about the same as one textbook. That’s a fair deal if you’ll use it every week. It’s a waste if you’ll open it twice a semester.

Try Grammarly Pro free first, then use the student offer once you know you’ll stick with it.

Cheaper or Free Alternatives For Students

If $72 is too much, these are worth a look:

  • QuillBot is stronger for paraphrasing and summarizing, and its free plan has a basic grammar checker. See my QuillBot review.
  • LanguageTool has a generous free tier and handles several languages.
  • Hemingway Editor is good for making dense writing easier to read.

I compared more of them in free Grammarly alternatives and best paraphrasing tools.

Does Grammarly have a student discount in 2026?

Yes. Verified students get 50% off Grammarly Pro through SheerID. Grammarly calls it a limited-time offer, so check the current status on its help centre before you rely on it.

How much is Grammarly Pro for students?

With the discount, the annual plan costs $72 for the first year instead of $144. That works out to about $6 a month.

Is there a Grammarly student discount code?

You don’t need a code. After SheerID verifies you, Grammarly emails you a personal promo link that applies the discount at checkout. Be wary of sites that list “student codes” for 60% or 70% off.

Can I get Grammarly Pro free with a .edu email?

Only if your school has a Grammarly for Education license. A .edu email on its own doesn’t unlock Pro. It does help you verify faster for the 50% discount.

Does the Grammarly student discount work in India and outside the US?

SheerID verifies students from schools in many countries, and Grammarly doesn’t limit the help article to the US. Prices may show in your local currency. If SheerID can’t find your school, upload a current student ID or fee receipt.

What happens when the discount ends?

Your plan renews at the regular price. Cancel before the renewal date in your account settings if you don’t want to pay full price.

Can I use the student discount on the Grammarly mobile app?

No. Grammarly excludes App Store and Google Play purchases. Upgrade from a web browser instead, then sign in on your phone.

Final Words

The Grammarly student discount is real, and it’s simple: verify with SheerID, use the emailed link, pick the annual plan, and pay $72 instead of $144.

Just check your school’s library first, because you might already have Pro for free. And put the renewal date in your calendar, because year two costs full price.
