Whatever you do, you will always come across certain rules that you should always keep in your mind. If you are not playing by the rules, you will most certainly be disqualified from the game. The same thing goes with blogging as well!
There are a lot of rules in the blogosphere that a blogger needs to follow if he/she wants to become popular. But there are some rules that don’t make sense now and you should probably break those blogging rules right now. Yes, I said it! There are many rules that made sense some years back but if you look at how things are happening currently, then some changes need to happen.

Break The Blogging Rules You Know
In this article, I am going to tell you about some blogging rules that you should break if you really want to succeed as a blogger. These rules are no more relevant as they used to be so when you break them you won’t get disqualified from the game of blogging.
Produce Original Content
You might have heard “CONTENT IS KING” a thousand times by now and it still is 100% true. Without proper content, you won’t be able to build a successful blog.
But do you think it is still necessary to publish original content on your blog? Let me rephrase the question, is it POSSIBLE to come up with original content every time you write a post?
The answer is NO! It’s definitely not possible to come up with a topic that’s not covered by anyone. You will always find a number of articles on the same topic that you are about to write on. But does that mean that you shouldn’t write on that particular topic and start searching for something original?
No, you should research on that very topic and try to come up with the most updated content and provide the best resources in your article as well.
You can take a look at the Skyscraper Technique by Brian Dean of Backlinko.com where he finds the content on other sites that are shared heavily on social media and has a great backlinks profile and then he goes on to prepare another article on the same topic but providing a lot more insights.
This method has worked for him pretty great and I don’t think of any way why it shouldn’t work for you.
So if you are not able to come up with an original idea, take up some hot topic and prepare the ultimate article and see the benefits of it.
Increasing Posting Frequency Increases Traffic
I have read this a lot and I don’t know why a lot of people still consider it one of the best ways to increase traffic on their blog.
Seriously, if you too think that posting an article daily, or posting twice a day will increase your blog’s traffic then you should take a look at ViperChill. Glenn Allsop doesn’t post a lot of articles on his blog, in fact, it would be surprising if he published more than 10 articles in a year.
The reason he doesn’t post a lot on his blog is he always tries to give the best to his readers. Go through each and every post on his blog and you will always learn something new from them. The topics are perfectly researched and he proves his point with case studies and shows actual results.
And even though he posts once in 2-3 months, the traffic never goes down. I am not saying that you should also post once in a month but what I am saying is don’t post articles just for the sake of it.
If you really want to increase traffic then try to write a highly researched article filled with case studies and actual results and you will see your traffic growing.
The posting frequency also depends on the niche of your blog. If you have news blog or a tech blog, then posting multiple times in a day would be a great thing to do but if you have a blog on blogging or Internet marketing, posting daily might not be such a good idea.
Never Re-Publish Your Articles Elsewhere
You might think that re-publishing your articles on other sites will gift you a Googly penalty then it’s correct. However, it only happens when you choose the wrong approach!
There are sites like Entrepreneur.com, Business Insider, Medium and others that allow you to repost your blog’s article on their site. Doing this, you can not only get a backlink from a high authority site but also you can get some referral traffic as a bonus.
But the biggest advantage of doing this is that you can create a brand for yourself. Neil Patel wrote a great article on this topic and if you haven’t yet read it then I recommend you to read it right now.
What the post says about re-posting your content on other sites is that you should do it but always ask the editors for a rel=”canonical” tag in your backlink.
The rel=”canonical” tag tells Google to give all the credits to the original source and not to index the current page where the article is re-posted.
So if you start re-publishing your articles on other sites, make sure those are high authority sites and the most important thing is that they should allow you to add the rel=”canonical” tag or else don’t re-post your content.
Write A Short And Simple Post
Do you recall that there was a time when the recommended post count was around 500 to 700 words? Yeah, but that’s not the case now!
Any article with a word count of 2000 or more words should be considered as long post whereas a post with word count of less than 1000 words is considered short.
If you go over at Seth Godin’s blog, you will see that all his articles are very short but still, they are shared thousands of times on social media. Similarly, this particular post on CopyBlogger which contains just 47 words also got a lot of comments and was heavily shared on social media.
So why are these short posts getting so much attention? Because the authors are huge authorities and have a great following. And if you are just starting out then your focus should be one producing long posts.
The reason is simple. Just head over to Google and type in a search query. Go through all the results on the first page and you will see almost all of these articles have a word count of more than 2000 words.

This isn’t the perfect rule and you cannot expect that by producing long content, your posts will rank higher on search engines.
You might want to adjust a little bit depending on the niche you are in. But if you still think that short posts are the best things then you are very, very wrong!
Hiring A Writer for Your Blog
There are times that your blog grows and you will need all the help you can get to update your blog regularly. In such a case, you would think that hiring a writer is the best choice you have. Well, it’s not the best choice in all cases!
Unless you have a tech blog or a news blog that requires being updated several times a day, I would suggest you to stay away from hiring any writers. The reason for this is really simple.
You have spent countless hours to build your blog and make it popular that your readers love the way you write. You have got a unique way of presenting the content and solving the problems and all your readers have got familiar with it and love it.
Now when you hire a writer to take care of the content, he might not be able to create article the same way as you did.
There are many successful bloggers like Neil Patel, who writes content on their blogs themselves. And when you write content yourself, you will be able to connect with your readers on a more personal level.
Also, there are many instances that some of the popular blogs hired writers and now the content published is just pure crap. I won’t mention the URLs here, but these are the sites that I was visiting every day and now I don’t even like when it appears in the search results.

Deleting Negative Comments
When you start making progress, you will also start making some enemies – people who will hate you just because you are doing better than them.
So what will you do at such a time? You should do nothing and just keep on working harder and piss them off even more!
The same goes with blogging as well. When you start gaining attention in the blogosphere and people start appreciating your work, there will be someone out there jealous of you. They will show off their jealousy by sending you hate mails or by posting negative comments on your articles.
E-mails are okay as no one is going to see them other than you, but when you get a negative comment, what do you do? Delete it? You should never ever delete a negative comment.
Rather than deleting the comment, try to understand what the person is trying to say. Reply to the comment politely and ask them if you made any mistake.
Maybe your hater will understand that you don’t give a damn what they think or they will actually get it that you are not here to make enemies but to make friends.
Negative comments won’t tarnish your image in front of your readers but when you delete a comment then that gives a hint that whatever the comment mentioned might actually be true.
Following Other Bloggers
First of all, let’s make one thing clear. Following here doesn’t mean that following the bloggers on Twitter, Facebook or through email or on some other social networking sites.
In this context, the following means doing whatever the bloggers are saying you to do.
You might have seen that when a blogger posts an article or a case study about his success. Most of the time, he/she will surely mention that you should do it too if you want to succeed. But that’s not always the case. If you try to do anything, like say trying to rank your blog using certain links, you might get penalized or worse, you might even get de-indexed from Google.
So when a certain blogger says something that you should do in order to succeed, you shouldn’t just do it right away. Make sure that the method works before implementing it on full scale.
For example, if a person shows you that he made amazing profits promoting a certain product using Facebook Ads and asks you to try it, then what you will do? You can certainly try it out but do it on a smaller scale. Set a budget of around $10-20 a day and see how that goes. If you see positive results then you can ramp up the budget slowly.
Copying Other Blogger’s Ways
When you see a blogger using a unique way to attract visitors or just to make it blog stand out then you might too feel the need of doing something similar with your blog.
Just look at the simple images that Glen Allsop uses on his blog or the Lego ones the Steve Kamb uses on NerdFitness. But the blog that stands out of all is TheBadBlogger because it not only provides you awesome tips about blogging but the images used on the articles are, in direct words, hot and sexy!
And I am not just saying about the images used on the blogs, I am talking about a whole new approach to build your blog. By now, you might have already heard of Matthew Woodward because he has built a successful blog with zero backlinks and has also received many awards for the same.
Now if you copy some of the already successful approaches then there are chances that it could work out for you too and there are equal chances that it won’t work for you.
However to actually build a unique blog, try to come up with something completely new. Images, videos, site design or whatever helps you stand out in the crowd.
Just don’t copy what other bloggers have done and come up with a unique approach to build an awesome blog.
Your Blog Is Your Property
Just because you pay the hosting bills, the domain renewal costs or any other bills that keep your blog running doesn’t mean that your blog is your property.
Take the example of your home. Your father or mother owns the house because he/she paid for it but the house belongs to the entire family!
Similarly the blog belongs to you as well as all the readers that come to your blog and engage with you through your posts.
I have not yet come across any blogger that thinks that the blog is their personal property and they can post whatever they want to, no matter if it’s way off-topic. But if you think this way, I would request you to forget it and treat your blog as your home and your readers as your family members.
