How Outdoor Signage Has Become an Eco-Friendly Marketing Channel

More and more businesses are searching for ways to make their operations more eco-friendly. Not only will sustainable business practices help reduce your carbon footprint, but consumers are seeking out businesses that are environmentally aware. When it comes to marketing, print advertising is not the most sustainable option as it creates a lot of waste and can only be used once. When you think of substantial outdoor displays like billboards, they are costly to print, plus you need to re-print a new one every time you change your advertising message.

The good news is that outdoor digital signage is an effective, customizable, and eco-friendly option for advertising your products or services. Here are some of the ways that using digital signage can make your business more eco-friendly.

Less paper wastage

Printing magazines, flyers, business cards, billboards, and posters are unsustainable because it requires a huge amount of paper.

Magazine production uses about 35 million trees each year in the United States alone, and almost all of the resulting materials are thrown out within a year of distribution.

Of those discarded materials, only 20% are recycled, meaning most of them to end up as waste. Digital signage does not require any printing and does not result in paper wastage, making it a much more sustainable option.

Your displays can be quickly changed and customized without any re-printing, meaning this approach is not only eco-friendly but also efficient.

Low energy

The new technology used in outdoor digital signage means this approach is much more energy-efficient than other marketing models.

Outdoor screens traditionally use a backlight to illuminate the display. In the evening, the backlight doesn’t need to be super strong.

In the daytime, the brightness needs to be much higher for the screen to be visible in the sunlight. Older display models didn’t have a brightness control option, and therefore they consumed much more energy.

Today’s more advanced options boast smarter technology that will alter the display’s brightness based on outdoor lighting conditions, such as whether it’s cloudy, sunny, day or night.

That said, they still require a lot of energy. Now, though, some options use almost no electricity at all.

Instead, they utilize the light from the sun with a reflective panel where the backlight would be. These panels bounce the sunlight back, creating light without the use of electricity at all.

Fewer resources

Any advertising media, whether physical or digital, requires resources.

Many resources go into producing commercials or advertising videos, from hiring actors to makeup and hair, sourcing costumes, scouting locations, feeding the crew, charging equipment, and driving.

Each of these activities has an environmental impact, as small as it may be.

The same goes for print media. You need to manufacture and ship your posters, magazines, or flyers, and they require chemicals, ink, and, of course, paper for production.

Digital outdoor signage is manufactured once and lasts many years, providing an advertising medium for many different businesses and brands over the years.

After initial production, digital signage requires very few additional resources.
